Background on the Conservation Commission

The Upton Conservation Commission was established by the voters of the Town to promote the preservation of the Town's natural resources.  It is an appointed committee by the Upton Board of Selectmen.  Their responsibilities include reviewing projects that could affect the Town's wetlands resource areas under the authority of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (MGL Ch 131, Sec 40) in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.  It also carries an open space planning, conservation education and public awareness.

The Town of Upton approved a Wetland Bylaw in May 2004.  Click here to review the bylaw.

The Conservation Commission is charged with reviewing construction, or other issues, that may potentially impact wetland areas.  If you are unsure if your project needs a filing with the Conservation Commission, please contact the administative office for assistance.

Regular meetings of the Conservation Commission are held at Nipmuc Regional Middle/High School on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month starting at 7:30 pm.  Regularly scheduled Wednesday night meetings are open to the public.  Anyone interested is encouraged to attend and participate.  Meeting agendas are posted at least 48 hours prior to the meeting date.  To view the meeting agenda please see the "Official Posted Meeting Notices" section of the website.

In addition to the scheduled meetings at the Nipmuc Regional Middle/High School, the Conservation Commission also conducts 'site visits.'  Site visits are meetings held out in the field at sites where we have received a Request for Determination or Notice of Intent.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities (research local natural resources, work on trail projects, or serve on the Commission), please contact the administrative assistant at concomm@upton.ma.us

Additional information is available from the Wetlands and Waterway Publications from the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.
